Exile Tibetans mourn the earthquake victims in Yushu

14th April 2010 /Dharamshala

Launching

Tibetans gathered at the main  Buddhist Temple here in Dharamshala to pray and show solidarity to the victims of the earthquake that hit Kyegudo (Chinese: Yushu) in  Tibet’s Kham Province.

“Not only are we grieving the death of hundreds of Tibetans who felt victim to this  natural disaster, we are also concerned about the wellbeing of the thousands injured by the earthquake in Kyegudo early this morning.” said Tsewang Rigzin, President of  Tibetan YouthCongress. “We demand an immediate rescue work and medical aid for all those injured.”

According to Tse-Tenzin(Ndpt regional executive member), a student at Sara University who is originally from Qinghai (Kyegudo), there were over 1000 dead bodies piled up in Tagyu Thong, with many more to be discovered and the death toll rising every minute, following the 7.1 Richter scale earthquake that hit on Wednesday morning. Tse-Tenzin was informed by a source that Tibetan monks are taking an active role in the rescue operations, especially those from Sethar Monastery. Although television reports only show repeated images of the same Chinese soldiers, the source states that monks are searching for people in the rubble and helping to treat injuries, particularly in the earthquake-prone areas of Tashi Da Thong and Shinghai Thong. There is currently a shortage of helpers and rescuers due to the fear that Kyeku- Dam may give way, and should that happen, it is obvious that Chinese soldiers will not be able to help anyone that may be trapped. The source reports that the death toll will be lower for the rich than for the poor, as soldiers are first focusing their rescue efforts on the elite. Moreover, the source finds it strange that more Chinese staff and civil servants have escaped injury, leading many in the population to believe that Chinese authorities knew about the inevitability of an earthquake in the area. Soldiers have also been busy helping Chinese government officials and securing government buildings. Victims of the earthquake have expressed various opinions as to the cause. Some are blaming the impact of Chinese factories and industry, while others believe the earthquake is due to the mining of gold from Jador Gang Kar, a mountain that is the site of a holy pilgrimage. Injured people are being taken to hospitals in the Chinese province of Qinghai Siling, and it appears that many poor Tibetans are facing serious medical problems. Seems many houses built by the Chinese government to the nomads, were all collapse due to bad construction.

National Democratic Party of Tibet 3rd General Body Meeting

NDPT PRESS RELEASE

27th March 2010

Launching

On Saturday, 27 March, the National Democratic Party of Tibet began its 3rd General Body Meeting. NDPT President Mr. Chime Youngdung gave an opening address to set the agenda for the day's meeting, and to welcome the guests, including current and former NDPT executive members, as well as representatives from Regional Chapters of the NDPT. The NDPT President noted that this meeting, which is held every two years, was particularly important this year given the 2011 elections for Kalon Tripa and Parliament. Chime Youngdung explained that the NDPT will be selecting candidates to endorse for these elections. The party will nominate 3 candidates for Kalon Tripa and 45 candidates for Parliament (15 from each Tibetan province) through what Mr. Chime Youngdung emphasized will be a transparent and fair democratic process. The NDPT President explained that to have a meaningful democracy, the Tibetan government has to switch to a multiparty system. With a party in power and at least one in the opposition, democracy will begin to flourish, he said. Mr. Chime Youngdung told the assembled NDPT members that the party must grow in order to become stronger and more efficient. In addition to more members, the President said the party needs more people to manage and administrate in order for the NDPT to function as a true and modern political party. The President warned against a misuse of democracy, and noted that a genuine democracy will require the participation of all Tibetans in elections and democratic processes. He emphasized the importance of the 2011 elections and urged the party to begin preparing and campaigning immediately.. The NDPT President concluded his remarks by wishing for a long life for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and by hoping that all of His Holiness's wishes for the Tibetan people come true

Following Chime Youngdung's speech, honored guest Tsewang Rinzin, President of the Tibetan Youth Congress, gave a warm greeting to all of the meeting's attendees. He noted that he did not prepare a speech in advance, instead preferring to just speak to the people. Tsewang Rinzin then thanked the guests who travelled so far to attend this important meeting. He also urged active participation during the debate in order to have a wide diversity of opinions heard. The TYC President emphasized the importance of the NDPT General Body Meeting, given that candidates will be nominated for the 2011 elections.

Afterwards, honored guest Penpa Tsering, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament, welcomed all NDPT members who came from Tibetan settlements throughout India and Nepal. He noted that the NDPT was founded 16 years ago and is like a child of the TYC. The NDPT now has its own offices and is completely independent, which he said was a positive development. Mr. Penpa Tsering commented that in the past, only one person was responsible for all of the NDPT's activities, and party members did not take active roles in supporting the organization. He said that this is unfortunately continuing during Mr. Chime Youngdung's tenure, and urged party members to become more active. The Speaker of Parliament went on to note that the upcoming 2011 elections for Kalon Tripa and Parliament are an important milestone for Tibetan history and democracy. As such, he hopes that the public will take its role as voters seriously. He said that the public should vote for the most qualified person, instead of voting for friends or neighbors. Penpa Tsering also mentioned that the NDPT has campaigned for candidates in past elections, but these campaigns were often not effective because, in his opinion, candidates lacked the proper qualifications. He noted that some Tibetans abroad have such a low opinion of the CTA, and are so skeptical of the upcoming elections, that they make their disappointment and anger felt online with scathing indictments of the Tibetan exile community and government. The Parliament Speaker concluded that these people are no better than the uneducated because although they have the abilities to help the government improve, they instead make trouble. These introductory remarks were followed by a tea break that allowed the guests from various regions an opportunity to greet each other and network. Afterwards, the NDPT gave a power point presentation and several more people gave remarks. The meeting will continue Sunday, 28 March, after which the NDPT will release a list of candidates it will endorse for elections.

Rinpoche and his Son sentenced to Prison in China

13th March,2010 Rinpoche Rinpoche

A Dri Rinpoche from Kham Zachu Kha of Onpo Monastery was sentenced to 5 years detention at Chushul prison. Rinpoche was previously a prisoner during the Cultural Revolution, though afterwards the PRC honored him with a post. On this occasion, he was arrested on 15th March 2008 at his monastery after being accused of involvement in the 10th March Uprising. Rinpoche was then kept in Toe Lung Prison for a year. On 15th December 2009, his Chinese disciples arrived in Lhasa to appeal his case. They appealed for clemency based on the grounds of the Rinpoche’s age and poor health. His time in prison led to a serious deterioration of his health, including two months of hospitalization. Despite being sentenced to 5 years and beginning his term at Chushul prison in February 2010, Chinese authorities remained silent about his case until after Losar.

Jointly Statement of 5 NGOs on 10th March, Tibetan Uprising Day

10th March 2010

Jointly

The 1959 Uprising marked the first spontaneous popular Tibetan uprising against Chinese invasion of Tibet. Almost the entire citizenry of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, assembled in front of Norbulingka, the summer palace, to protect their leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and to demand that the Chinese army leave Tibet. Since 1959, Tibetans inside Tibet and in exile have marked the National Tibetan Uprising Day.

March 10th is a day for Tibetans everywhere to be proud of our history. Proud of our identity, proud of our ancestors who died in protecting our nation, proud of the courageous resistance of Tibetans inside Tibet, and proud of the younger generation who raise the flag of Tibetan freedom ever higher.

We are here because we are Tibetan and because we have an international recognized right to self determination, to live our lives free of China's oppression. Today, we renew our resolve to the Tibetan struggle, so that one day soon we can return to a free Tibet.

Inside Tibet, thousands of political prisoners still languish under harsh condition inside Chinese prison and the 2008 Tibetan uprising in Tibet has revealed that even after 50 years of occupation Tibetan continue to suffer under all forms of life and liberty, Tibetans are getting marginalised and unhappy under Chinese rule,

Recently the Chinese government has reportedly launched a “Strike Hard” campaign in Tibet’s capital Lhasa and surrounding areas to intimidate and suppress Tibetans in the lead up to this sensitive anniversary. But, in spite of China's brutal repression, there is a powerful new movement growing in Tibet. It is being led by the younger generation and they are using creative, nonviolent tactics to challenge China's occupation

We are here to stand with our brothers and sisters in Tibet to send a message to the Chinese government that no matter how much they try to suppress the voices of Tibetans inside Tibet, Tibetans are more united than ever before in our struggle to regain our country and win our freedom.

In the recent years, the Chinese government has intensified surveillance of all forms of communication inside Tibet. A simple text message or phone call can result in lengthy prison sentence. We demand a stronger response from world government to pressure the Chinese leadership to stop its crackdown against Tibetans who dare to communicate information about the situation inside Tibet to the outside world.

As Tibetans inside Tibet continue their courageous nonviolent resistance to Chinese rule, it's time for leaders of free countries to take bold stand for Tibet.

NDPT President Statement on 51st Uprising Day.

10th March 2010

This year marks the year of intrigue for the brave Tibetans living all over the Tibet who had participated in the protest without preplan and gathering, but voluntarily moved forward to claim their rights from red Chinese and today we mark the 51st day of uprising. Today on this very important day we the NDPT would like to solute the hard work and dedication made by all our brave Tibetan brothers and sisters who live inside Tibet as well as all over the world and hearty welcome to all.

As of now so many Tibetans has sacrifice their life and put various pressure on china by following the non-violent path. The very act and purpose of our protest is to preserve our culture and land which actually belongs to us, to bring Tibetans who live all over Tibet closer. If we speak from different point of view our struggle doesn’t only concerns Tibetans but it is for the world peace as well. It is clear that during those 50 years, China has done unthinkable and unbearable torture and exploitation in Tibet, especially during 1987 the great revolution and in 2008, non-violent protest in Tibet. China showed no mercy and they used all modern weapons to suppress Tibetans. Over hundreds and thousands of Tibetans were killed and many were put behind the bar without valid reasons. More over many Tibetans were kidnapped and till now we have no clues on them. So this ruthless behavior of china is Cristal clear in everyone’s eyes.

This year’s 51st uprising day is extremely important in our history. HH the Dalai Lama along with Tibetans had lived in exile for the past 50 years; during those years Tibetans in exile has done everything to stay in connected with Chinese government. Moreover, Tibetans outside the Tibet has arranged many dialogues with Chinese leaders and administrators. Nevertheless Chinese authorities keep on pressurizing Tibetans who lived inside the Tibet. China completely denied the historical facts and opposes HH the Dalai lama and Central Tibetan Administration, which in reality always try to serve and benefits Tibetans .From today onwards, we need to put more efforts and to strive for a brighter future and freedom. Need a cooperated activities initiating in every places in the world to enhance the knowledge of Tibet cause to everyone.
